Window Types & Materials
What is the difference between vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass window frames?
Vinyl frames are the most common replacement choice in Austin — they don’t conduct heat, are durable in UV exposure, and cost less than aluminum or fiberglass. Aluminum frames conduct heat directly into the home — a significant problem in Austin’s climate. Fiberglass frames offer the highest strength and lowest thermal conductivity but at higher cost. Most Austin homeowners replacing original aluminum windows choose vinyl.
What is the difference between single pane, double pane, and triple pane windows?
Single pane windows have one layer of glass with no insulating air or gas space. Double pane windows have two glass layers with an argon gas fill between them — 2–3x better insulation than single pane. Triple pane windows have three glass layers with two gas-filled spaces — maximum insulation and noise reduction. For most Austin homes, double pane with Low-E coating is the right specification.
What is a single hung window versus a double hung window?
Single hung windows have a fixed top sash and an operable bottom sash. Double hung windows have both sashes operable and both tilt inward for cleaning. Double hung windows are preferred for multi-story Austin homes where cleaning the exterior glass from inside is a practical necessity.
What is a casement window?
A casement window is side-hinged and opens outward with a crank mechanism. When fully open, the entire window area is available for ventilation — more than any other window type. Casement windows are preferred for kitchen sinks and rooms needing maximum ventilation in Austin’s hot months.
Energy Efficiency in Austin
What is Low-E coating and why does it matter in Austin?
Low-E (low-emissivity) coating is a microscopically thin metal layer applied to the glass surface. It reflects infrared heat — blocking 40–70% of solar heat gain depending on specification. For Austin’s west-facing windows, Low-E coating is the single most impactful glass upgrade available. Austin averages 100+ days above 90°F annually.
What ENERGY STAR specifications apply to Austin windows?
Austin falls in the South-Central climate zone (IECC climate zone 2B). ENERGY STAR certified windows for this zone require a U-factor of ≤0.30 and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of ≤0.25. These specs prioritize solar heat rejection — the primary concern in Austin’s climate.
How much can I save on cooling costs with new windows in Austin?
Savings vary widely depending on home size, HVAC efficiency, and baseline window performance. Many Austin homeowners report 15–25% reductions in summer cooling costs after replacing original builder windows with Low-E double-pane units. We don’t promise specific dollar amounts — the actual savings depend on your specific home.
Are there rebates available for window replacement in Austin?
Austin Energy offers rebate programs for qualifying window replacements. The federal 25C energy efficiency tax credit also applies to ENERGY STAR certified windows. We recommend checking current program availability directly with Austin Energy and your tax advisor — rebate amounts and eligibility requirements change periodically.
Pricing & Process
How much does window replacement cost in Austin?
Window replacement costs in Austin typically run $300–$800 per window installed, depending on size, frame material, and glass type. Whole-house replacement projects range from $4,000 to $20,000+ depending on window count and specifications. We provide written pricing before any work begins — no surprises.
What is included in window replacement?
Window replacement includes removal of the existing window unit, installation of the new window unit, weatherproofing and flashing, and cleanup. Interior and exterior trim work is typically not included unless specified in the scope. We present a written scope before any work begins so you know exactly what is included.
How long does window replacement take?
A single window takes 1–2 hours. A whole-house replacement (10–15 windows) typically takes 1–2 days. Large whole-house projects (20+ windows) take 2–3 days. We install one window at a time so your home is never fully open to the outside at once.
Do you provide written pricing before work begins?
Yes. We provide a written scope of work and pricing before any work begins. No work starts without your approval. This is non-negotiable on every project.
Repair vs. Replacement
Do you repair windows?
We specialize in full window replacement and new window installation. For repair of existing windows — including broken glass, failed seals, or hardware issues — we recommend contacting your original installer or a local glass repair specialist.
When should I repair versus replace my windows?
If your windows have a single cracked pane or a broken latch, repair may make sense — we recommend contacting your original installer or a glass specialist for repair work. If your windows are fogging between panes, frames are warping, or you’re seeing a pattern of seal failures, replacement is typically more cost-effective than repeated repairs.
My double-pane window is fogged — can it be cleared?
No. Fogging between the panes means the seal has failed and the argon gas fill has escaped. Moisture has entered the space between the panes and condensed on the interior glass surfaces. This is not cleanable — the window unit needs to be replaced.
My window glass is cracked — is that a repair or replacement?
A single cracked pane may be repairable by a glass specialist. If the crack is in a double-pane unit, the entire insulating glass unit (IGU) typically needs replacement. If the frame is also damaged, full window replacement is usually the right choice. We recommend contacting your original installer or a glass specialist for cracked glass assessment.
Service Area & Scheduling
What areas do you serve?
We serve residential homes in South Austin, North Austin, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Leander, Kyle, and Georgetown. Call (512) 615-9042 to confirm service availability at your address.
Do you work with HOA requirements for window replacement?
Yes. Many Austin suburb HOA communities require specific window frame colors or styles. We work with HOA requirements and can match frame colors to HOA specifications. Bring your HOA guidelines when you call — we’ll confirm compatibility before ordering.
Do I need a permit for window replacement in Austin?
Permit requirements for window replacement in Austin depend on the scope and type of work. Like-for-like window replacement in the same opening typically does not require a permit. Structural changes to openings or new openings require permits. We advise on permit requirements for your specific project before work begins.
